About: The old name for the island at St Ives was Pendinas which means fortified headland. The 'Island' is connected to the mainland and so is in fact an isthmus. The chapel of St Nicholas on the Island dates back to 15TH century although it was demolished in 1904 it was rebuilt in 1911
