About: The town crier in Saltash resplendent in his robes and bell to summon the crowds. The job of town crier dates back to Ancient Greek and Roman times when it has been necessary to have a trusted person with a clear, loud voice to deliver news and instructions to the population because most could neither read nor write. As well as a loud voice the bell is an obvious means of gaining the attention of a crowd although in the past a drum or a horn may also have been used
