Bude canal was originally constructed to carry coal, sand and limestone to the inland farms of north Devon and Cornwall and it was hoped to link the navigable reaches of the Tamar. With the arrival of the railway in around 1890 work stopped with only a thirty mile stretch completed and this fell into decline
