Before becoming a major tourist attraction Mevagissey was the largest fishing village in St Austell Bay. Nearly everyone in the village was employed in the catching and processing of fish. The need to process near to the harbour created a labyrinth of buildings separated by steeply sloping alleyways. Some of the these alleyways were so narrow that the baskets of fish were carried on poles between people walking one behind the other.
