Fishing was once the life blood of Mevagissey, in the oldest part of the area around the harbour narrow alleys were reputed to give cover to the fishermen escaping the press gangs and the Preventive officers. Smuggling was also rife with salt, teaand brandy coming in and tobacco and other things going out.
