Pleasure crafts dominate at Mevagissey today but some fishing still remains. From around 1500 fishing became important to the area and piers and wharves were constructed. Almost unique to this part of Cornwall the cottages were built in the cliff rock with the ground floor for storing so there was an earthen floor, the living part was above and often the entrance was in the roof.
