The ferries at Torpoint have plied their way across the river Tamar for over 200 years. Once driven by steam they now have diesel engines and in recent years they have been stretched to take more vehicles but they still run on chains laid under the river. This design was devised by J M Rendel who was the 'floating bridge' engineer.
