The nearby village of Roche which is situated in mid Cornwall derives its name from this remarkable rock. Roche parish is well above sea level and it is surrounded by moorland waste. To the south close by the Hensbarrow downs, on a clear day, it is possible to see both the north and sourth coasts. Also to the west and north to Goss Moor and Tregoss Moor.
