The poet Rev Robert Stephen Hawker was vicar at Morwenstow for nearly forty years. He was always concerned that the bodies of drowned men received a Christian burial
but perhaps he is best remembered for sitting in his driftwood hut smoking opium and writing poetry. The hut is now owned by the National Trust.
