According to Keith Brown and Bob Acton is their book Exploring Cornish Mines. The dams in the bottom of Wheal Maid Valley were built in the 1970s for Billiton Minerals who tried dredging for tin in the Carnon River. Later Caron Consolidated took over the site and had planning permission to use the site as a dump for their concentrated tailings from a planed new mill at South Crofty. This never got built and right up to the day South Crofty Closed in 1998 the ore processing was being performed at Wheal Jane.
