About Gweek Cornwall.
Gweek is located three miles east of Helston on the A394, the village lies at the uppermost branch of a tidal river called the Helford. When the nearby port of Helston silted up in the 13th century Gweek became an important commercial port. but trading in tin dates back to about 450BC. Charcoal is also known to have been imported for smelting and in the Tudor times Gweek was a very active port that enjoyed a busy coastal trade until it too silted up.
Boat building is still carried on today and a boatyard, pub and village store plus a number of small churches make up this picturesque village.
Seacore an independent and privately owned specialist marine drilling contractor is located at Lower Quay. Started in 1976 it employs about 150 people and has a reputation for providing innovative solutions to the many engineering and environmental challenges that characterise marine projects.
The Seal Sanctuary now sited at Gweek began in 1958 when Ken Jones rescued a seal pup at St. Agnes. As time went on he became known for his work with seals and he eventually needed more room as his single pool was not big enough. In 1975 the Seal Sanctuary moved to Gweek and today has nursery pools, convalescence, and resident pools, and also a specially designed hospital with isolation pools as well as treatment and preparation areas. At the sanctuary there is a mixture of seal types including Grey and Common Seals, Californian and Patagonian Sea Lions. The Sanctuary also provides gives a home to a variety of other animals, such as otters, ponies and goats..
